A mortise handle is the handle set that goes with a mortise lock, the lock body fitted inside the edge of the door. You can pick a rose handle, where the lever and the keyhole each sit on their own small round or square plate, or a handle on plate, where both share one long backplate.

Rose handles look cleaner and more modern, especially on flush and designer doors. Handles on plate are quicker to fit and cover old holes when you are replacing hardware.

Solid brass handles feel heavier and last for decades. Zinc alloy handles give the same designs and finishes at a lower price. PVD finishes (gold, rose gold) are harder-wearing than ordinary plating and keep their colour longer.

Mortise Door Handles: Questions We Get Asked

What is the difference between a rose handle and a handle on plate?

A rose handle has a separate small plate for the lever and for the keyhole. A handle on plate mounts both on one long backplate.

Brass or zinc door handles, which is better?

Solid brass is heavier and the most durable. Zinc alloy is lighter and more affordable while offering the same looks and finishes.

What does PVD finish mean?

PVD (physical vapour deposition) bonds the gold or rose gold colour to the metal as a thin hard layer, so it resists scratches and fading better than normal plating.

How do I clean designer door handles?

Wipe with a soft cotton cloth only. Avoid cleaners, detergent, thinner, acid and masking tape on the finish.
