How the calculator estimates sheets
For each cabinet the tool adds up the surface area of every panel — the two sides, top and bottom, internal shelves, vertical partitions and the front shutters — as 18mm plywood or 19mm block board. Back panels are counted separately in 6mm ply, and drawer boxes in 12mm ply. A 15% wastage margin is added to cover cutting offcuts, then the total is divided by your chosen sheet size and rounded up to whole sheets.
Tips to reduce plywood wastage
- Design cabinets in modules close to standard sheet fractions (2 ft / 4 ft widths cut cleanly from an 8×4 sheet).
- Pick the sheet size that matches your tallest panel — a 7 ft wardrobe side wastes less on a 7×4 sheet than an 8×4.
- Use 6mm ply for backs instead of full-thickness board to save cost and weight.
- Order all sheets of one thickness together so offcuts from one cabinet feed the next.

Plywood Calculator — Common Questions
A typical 6 ft × 7 ft wardrobe needs roughly 6–8 sheets of 18mm plywood (8×4 ft) for the carcass and shutters, plus 1–2 sheets of 6mm ply for the back panel. The exact count depends on the number of shelves, drawers and partitions — enter your size in the calculator above for a tailored estimate.
Use 18mm BWR plywood for the main carcass (sides, top, bottom, shelves) as it holds screws and weight well. Use 19mm block board for long shutters and tabletops to prevent sagging, 12mm ply for drawer boxes, and 6mm ply for back panels. For kitchens near water, choose BWP (marine) grade.
Standard plywood sheets are sold as 8×4, 7×4, 6×4, 7×3 and 6×3 feet. Block board is commonly available in 8×4, 7×4 and 6×4 feet. The 8×4 ft (32 sq ft) sheet is the most widely used size for furniture work.
Plywood is made of thin cross-bonded veneers and is strong in every direction — ideal for carcasses and load-bearing shelves. Block board has a core of solid wood battens, making it lighter and less prone to sagging over long spans — ideal for shutters, tabletops and long shelves. Many carpenters use both in the same project.
It gives a tentative planning estimate based on standard cabinet construction plus a cutting margin. Real usage varies with the carpenter’s cutting layout, joinery, and design details. Treat it as a close ballpark for budgeting, and confirm the final material list with your carpenter or with our team.
A cutting and wastage margin of about 10–15% is normal for furniture work, because sheets rarely cut without offcuts. Our calculator already adds a 15% margin. For complex designs with many small panels, keep a little extra in hand.
